8 Foot Makeover

February 25, 2020

My son in law is something special. He takes very good care of one of our most cherished treasures, my daughter. He honored us when he married her.  He also takes care of 2 of my 3 grand babies. He most of the time is quiet unless it’s Cowboy season or really any football game. He doesn’t ever ask us for much of anything but the occasional help with a home project. We love him very much. When he text me and ask if I could build him a desk I was excited. That text was followed by some pretty odd request. The desk needed to be 8 foot long. Say what? Why in the world does anyone need a desk that long? He explained and it made me cry. He wanted a desk so that he and his son could have their computers next to each other. So he could see what was going on with him while he was on the computer. So they could play games together and enjoy time together. How in the world could I say no to that.

I knew what I was going to use from my stash. A few months back and I mean so many months back it was over a year, I was driving through a neighborhood and saw bits and pieces of a table base in a trash pile. Greg was with me and I got the normal eye roll, with the OMG what can you do with that. The legs on this broken down base was really beautiful and thats about all it had. I have stored these beauties for that special project and now that project was in front of me.

Step 1:
Gather all the things I needed to make this 8 foot monster come to life. I had those legs and the end pieces for the base. At Lowes I had to buy 8ft side boards and the top. Greg said nothing but the best so it had to be a solid top even though my son in law said it didn’t have to be so cost would stay down. Greg said only a solid surface would make for a great working surface. We bought cabinet grade pile wood. This would also keep the weight down because it was already stacking up to be heavy.

Step 2:
Putting the base all together was first on my list. It went really quick because everything was already precut. You will notice that we used scrap 2×4’s for bracing in the middle section.  The length in total is a bit more than 8ft so we did a farm house table trim on each end so that we covered the extra length and it fit in with my daughter home decor style.

Step 3:
Now to paint! I decided to do it all white because in the next few weeks the wall behind this big desk will be painted Cowboy navy. When that happens this desk is gonna pop out. The rest of the room will be decorated with Cowboy memorabilia. I finished off the desk with Defender to seal the top and make it ready for some serious gaming.

It was clear from the look on his face that he is happy. That night he texted me a really sweet thank you. As always when I do something for their home he always offers to pay. Just asking me for my Blue Happy designs is priceless to me so no payment please.  I love to go to their home and watch them as a family.  I love to see them raise those grand babies of ours. I was one happy Lolli to deliver this big 8ft monster of a desk.
