The heavy feeling that seems to be looming over me these days makes me sick. I can’t shake it I know that it’s coming. I feel it at every turn of my day. I know that there is no going back so this will roll over the horizon like a thief in the night. Without care or concern this cloud will burst and there it will be……..WINTER. I hate winter and winter is stupid. I know all you pumpkin spice loving people who love your cold weather and cloudy skies are so happy. Well good for you winter lovers. I’ll be over here freezing when the cold front hits Sunday evening. Enjoy my cold weather friends summer will once again emerge and 100 degrees will rise again.
Now I’m not that depressed that I can’t do a good makeover on a piece of furniture. Although I do not like cold weather I do love the holiday’s. One of my favorite things is preparing my home for my family to celebrate. Your kitchen or dining room in your home becomes the star of the show during this time. How does yours look? Is it ready to welcome company and family? This past week I had the opportunity to redo a beautiful old piece of furniture. It was full of old time Art Deco charm with its wood carved glass door design and the art deco hardware. I bought this piece from Rusty by Design Auction. If you haven’t shopped them before it’s a must for treasure from the past. I shop them every week and always seem to find a few things to bid on.
Upon picking this piece up I felt like it was is great shape. So, easy paint out, sand back and wax. All was going well until I started the sanding then I noticed an issue. There is a wood skirt around the bottom. When I started to sand it started to peel off. The paint just started to come off in large pieces. Apparently the bottom skirt had a few chips in it so the owner used wood like tape to cover it up. I might need my eyes check because I never noticed. So every thing stopped and I had to paint again but once that was done It all went well.
I decided not to paint the inside of the cabinet because I wanted the wood in the glass doors to stand out. Leaving the wood let the old world charm come out even more. I used Old English Dark Oil to cover over all the scratches on the shelves. It looked like new when I finished. In most homes today having a spot for a large china cabinet doesn’t work. This piece is perfect in size. Pretty dish storage on top with closed storage on the bottom.
China cabinets like this could also be used in a bedroom for extra storage. It would be great as an entryway piece or in a kitchen for extra dish storage. I kinda favor the idea of using it in the bathroom. Having all my pretty perfumes and towels all rolled and stacked up pretty. One of my clients had me redo her mothers old piece so she could use it in her office to store extra supplies and awards. She has told me that every day she thinks of her mom and smiles as she looks over the top of her computer. It is there to remind her of her mom. I believe we have moved beyond giving one purpose to a piece of furniture. Everything in our homes need to be versatile so when life changes so can our furniture. We need to think out of the box and reinvent what we have without spending money, tossing things to the curb or just living in a home that doesn’t work. The only piece I can think of that doesn’t work in every room might be your bed. Well okay if you want a bed in your living room instead of a couch then go for it. Life is short, live in it.
