So I have this friend who gave me this little cabinet. It was in excellent shape so I didn’t have to do any repairs. It was perfect in size, shape and height. I knew I wanted to work on this piece as soon as she gave it to me. It challenged my creative soul because it was so far from farmhouse style. As I examined the piece I noticed a sticker on the bottom that said “Made In India”. Things like this makes me wanna prove you can take any piece and turn it farmhouse with a little bit of paint. So that is what I sat out to do.
The picture of the piece she texted me doesn’t do it’s cuteness justice. It’s full of character and a few things already screamed farmhouse. I’m talking about those slat wood cabinet doors. I couldn’t wait to give these a chalk paint redo. The wood knobs have seen better days and didn’t really offer much to the piece, so that will be a change out at the end.
Although it was very clean I still gave it a good wipe down as I always do to every piece. This assures that the paint will stick to the piece without coming off. I went with Pure White from Chalk Country Paint so it was as farmhouse as I could get it. The base stain is dark so when you use white of any level you might have to give it 2 coats. This one took 2 coats and over night dry time.
The next stage was the sand back. I could go with a light sand with little removal so the base stain barely showed through. A lot of people love this look so it’s not so farmhouse but still has a less than perfect look. My favorite is to go hog-wild with the sander and make it really chippy. I love the chippy look the more the better for me. Some plike it some don’t. I think it’s great when kids or grands are around because they can’t hurt it. If it gets a nick it just adds character.
This piece could be used in so many places in the home. I can see it in the bathroom for extra storage or in the bedroom for a place to store your personal items like your phone while it charges. I also love it as an entry cabinet into your home or apartment. Whatever it is used for I wanted it to have good protection so I gave it 3 coats of Defender on the surface areas.
From India to the USA and now Blue Happy restored. I love the way the new hardware gives it a dressed up look. Inside the cabinet I painted a chocolate gray to give it a dresser look. In the end it all worked out to be a farmhouse piece.
