Routine and Quirkiness It’s All Inside My Box

July 23, 2018

Everyday I start with the best of intentions. I begin my day with a run and prayer. It’s rare if I sleep in no matter what day it is. When I say sleep in that means my feet don’t hit the floor before 5am. I’m a little bit of a control freak so my routine has to always be the same. Most always I eat the same foods. I’m very picky how we leave the house and drive out of our neighborhood. The toilet paper has to be under not over. Yes under not over I said, please no emails on that one. Over the years Greg has learned to just go with the flow of things. I guess that is why our marriage works so well. He loves all my quirkiness and never expects anything other than quirkiness. On a rare occasion I don’t react to something that he knows bugs me. He gives me a are you okay look. Sometimes it’s best to just let it go when you are in a crowd of people who don’t get your quirkiness.

When it comes to my art I don’t follow rules hardly ever. Although I do start with a plan in my head and sometimes I have a drawing. Funny thing is what I plan and where I finish are always miles apart. That is what happens when you harbor a creative soul. It has a mind of its own and a way of moving in a direction that is its own.

This past weekend I started a piece that was going to be a simple paint, sand back and clear coat. Slap some wheels on that puppy and roll it out the door. Well that isn’t what went down in my studio at all. The dresser wasn’t really anything special and it didn’t speak to me at all. I had looked at it for months with nothing stirring my creative brain. So I decided it was time to just get it done and move on. What I didn’t expect was what happened once I started the sand back. I was going to just give it a really shabby chic white look add some new knobs and call it a day. As I sanded I started thinking what if I added some old wood somehow to give it a Shabby rustic look. With the wheels on it I could see it as a center island, a entryway piece, a patio serving bar and even a bathroom or bedroom storage piece. I grabbed up some pieces of pallet wood and my handyman Greg. We dressed the back and sides with pallet wood. On top I used a piece of wood that still had the original bark on it. It didn’t cover the full top but it did give it a special look that you will not find in one of those box furniture stores. The wheels give it the freedom to be moved and used in multiple rooms of the home. Sadly I forgot to take a before picture of the dresser.  You get the point it was boring and plain with no personality.

This piece is now down at Doc Holliday’s Emporium 113 S Birmingham Wylie Tx.  Gosh I wish I had a place for this to be in my home.  It is so hard to let go of all these pieces.  On occasion someone buys a piece and sends me a picture of it in their home.  It thrills my soul to see it being loved.
