This One For Greg

March 22, 2018

So yesterday I blogged about Greg’s beloved stereo stopped working. I also said it was from the 70’s and I was wrong. He corrected me on Facebook so everyone knew it was from 1967. So glad we got that corrected. Life will be so much better now that we know that. Anyway on to the makeover of the stereo.

Greg found the stereo at an estate sale while I was working at Doc Holliday’s last Saturday. After he texted pictures, texted more, called me and then texted more on his second trip there he bought it. Oh my goodness buy the thing already it was only $75 half off of $150. He somehow managed to get it in the back of his Mini Cooper. That was so funny, wish I had a picture of that to post. As we took it out of his Mini he said let’s get it done this weekend. WHAT I’m kinda full right now with other work to do. Hello, 2 stores and both selling out on a regular basis. The sad look on his face told me I needed to move on it and get it done.

It was in perfect shape. No repairs were needed but that orange fabric over the speakers had to go. It was just glued on so it came off really easy. I don’t paint the insides of the stereo to keep from messing with the components. I painted the outside with 3 coats of Crisp Collar from Chalk Country paint, sanded back the edges and 2 coats of Defender clear finish. I used Valspar project paint for  the hardware and the metal screen over the speakers.

I bought the metal screen at Lowes. I used paper to make a templet to make sure I cut it the perfect size. This metal is so thin I cut it with tin snips. I attached it with very small screws and touched them up with black paint.

All that was left to do was plug it in and load it up with his vinyl’s.  When Greg saw it he was so happy.  There is music in our house once more.  We will have lots of family fun with this new/old stereo.  Recycle, redo, restore is how we should all look at life.  There isn’t much of anything that can’t be restored back into our lives.  Sometimes things happen and just when we think it’s a loss it all works out.
