I love to recreate things into something it wasn’t meant to be. It gives me that high all artist look for when doing a piece. Lately I’ve been sketching a lot and most of those things are a bit odd. I have big plans for an old wood ironing board, dreams for connecting an old metal parts cabinet to a small breakfast table and oddly enough I’m still dreaming about a pile of furniture that only parts can be saved. All of this is swirling around in my head.
Yesterday I wanted to do something creative but the day had got away from me doing household things. I decided to do something quick and fun. On my last trip to Waco and a shopping spree at Junky Monkey I scored tons of metal table bases. My dream day is to go to Junky Money with my work gloves in hand and stay for hours trolling through her back lot. Jill the owner of Junky Money is one of the best dealers in Waco to visit. Her store is full of things that can make an artist sit up and sing. While the back lot is a furniture flippers dream the inside of her store is full of treasures that you can buy and place in your home without any work. If you visit Waco this store is a must go and see. The address of Junky Monkey is 1715 La Salle Ave, Waco, Texas 76706.
One of the many tables I found last weekend was this cute little white round metal table base. It is the perfect size to turn into a side table, but it needs a bit of punch to give it art WOW factor. While shopping our way back home via Granary Texas we stopped at a thrift store. Leaning up against a shelf as if it wasn’t important was a slice of a large tree trunk. At first Greg was like why are you looking at that and why do you look so happy about that chunk of tree. Because my dear love this is the top to my white metal piece. He replied with a smirk and okay as he carried the heavy piece to the register. This man always believes in my creations or he just doesn’t want to challenge me. I wanted to work on this all week but Sunday afternoon late was my first chance. It was simple to do really, I used a metal base spray paint doing 3 coats all over. There really wasn’t any repairs to be made so it made this project fast and easy. Once dry that is when Greg stepped in to drill holes in the curled part of the stand. We flipped over the wood piece and attached it to the table base. I did 5 coats of clear finish top, side and bottom to seal the wood. This will protect it from anything getting into the wood. Moisture would be the enemy of a piece like this.
So there you have it two unlikely pieces joined together to make one beautiful piece. Doing things like this in your home can be a great start of conversation. It also sets your home apart from other homes and the same old furniture pieces everyone else has. I love have different things around me to remind me we are all different but there is beauty in the difference. Hope your Monday is warm and Blue Happy.
This table will arrive at Doc Holliday’s Emporium 113 S Birmingham Wylie on Wednesday 10/18.
