You don’t even notice that small table you and your family eat at each day. When it was new you loved it and couldn’t stop looking at it. Now its worn out, yesterday’s stain color and you want a new one. STOP before you go spend a lot of money on a new one lets up cycle the old one. I made up this mix and match set from my storage unit. The chairs are 90’s style and the table is from the 50’s. Once the table had a leaf that made it larger for family gatherings. The mechanics that make the table open is art with in this piece. You don’t see these kinds of mechanics much any more. We live in a world of plastic and press wood furniture. So I was amazed when I pulled open the table and saw this. I considered taking out the mechanics framing them in a shadow box for art. I decided to leave them for others to enjoy.
Start with picking a color scheme that works in your home. Don’t go with what is safe step out of your color box and live bold. This table seems to be the perfect set to mix 5 different colors. All Valspar project spray paint. This paint has a built-in primer so no pre-primer needed. The white will be for the base of the table and serve as a neutral color to pull it all together.
The chairs were sprayed and sanded back. Same for the table base but when sanded back I got a surprise. The dark green paint showed through and it complimented the other colors on the chairs. The table top was sanded back to raw wood then stained dark walnut. Clear finish was added to the entire set.
That’s all it takes to make a BIG change in your home. One day, worn out table set and $27. That’s all you need to give your family a new place to gather. For my family those days and evening at the table are still memories I will always cherish. Many of life plans, dreams, hopes and tears were shared sitting around our table. When my daughter moved into her new home I gave her one of my recycled dining tables. When my son got married I did a table set for his new family. Tables are given many names kitchen table, breakfast table, dinner table or just table. We should rethink the name and call them gathering table. This is where your family gathers to share their thoughts and gather their memories.
