Recently a couple that works at Doc Holliday’s home burnt down. So many people donated, pitched in and wanted to help. I decided that I would fill their bedroom with a little Blue Happy. After talking to this sweet couple I decided on 2 night stands and a bench would be what was needed to fill up their bedroom. Before the fire they had a beautiful decor going on of teal and chevron. Now after the fire they have decided to go a different direction. The bed covering is in whites and off whites with he theme of Paris on the bed cover. She loves shabby chic and he loves her so shabby chic it is. The bedroom is small but still has lots of character. The size of your home has nothing to do with its character and style.
First things first before I went to my storage shed to dig out the night stands, I needed the size of space on each side of the bed. When she texted me back the size was a bit shocking and I was worried I didn’t have anything to fit the area. It couldn’t be any wider than 23 inches. Yep that’s what she said only 23 inches no more or it wouldn’t fit. I was in luck, I found 2 night stands that were small enough to fit but they didn’t match. One was white washed and the other was stained dark brown. They had great bones and could be pulled together to coordinate buy using design and color. The first table I started with was tall with 3 drawers. It is the smallest of the 2 night stands. I’m doing it to as manly shabby chic as I can. Let’s face it, manly and shabby chic really don’t fit together but I’m gonna try my best.
Crisp Collar by Chalk Country was the color we all decided on. I didn’t want to just paint it white and put new hardware so I planned to use that special tool I have and make it look like old wood on top. I first painted the top with the Steel Gray Chalk Country paint. You have to have a darker base color before you use the wood tool. Once the base coat is dry you quickly add the top color and while it is wet you drag the wood tool through the paint. I also did the edges the same way. While that set up I painted the rest of the night stand and drawers in the same Crisp Collar setting it aside to dry. After all was good and dry I did the sanding back to make sure it had that shabby chic look. I waxed the body of the night stand and the drawers but not the top. Night stands get a fair amount of use next to the bed. I decided to use a different sealer for the top. Chalk Country has a product called defender and it’s best on the top of pieces well used. I applied 3 coats sanding lightly between each.
The hardware was the finishing touch and I decided to use made to look old hardware from Hobby Lobby. I used a smaller knob on the top drawer and the other two drawers have the same. I can’t wait to deliver this to the couple and let them enjoy them. Tomorrow night I’ll share with you the other nightstand and on Friday the beautiful bench.
