This weekend at the Doc Holliday’s sidewalk sale I set out a piece that so many are sending in questions about. It was the Texas star table with 2 chairs. It is a stunning piece that started out a gross seat stained, scratched bar table set that most wouldn’t even entertain having in their home. I restored it and now it’s ready for any covered patio, man cave, family room or kitchen.
It’s not the painted chairs or table legs I got questions about it was the table top. So let me share how that was done. First the table had to be sanded down to the raw wood. I started it and my son Dallas finished it because I wasn’t up to the heat and sanding. After it was clear of the terrible stain job the fun began. I taped off the star with masking tape along with the strips. It’s important to make sure the tape is down good so the stain doesn’t go up under the tape. I applied the dark walnut stain in the direction of the wood. When I got to the tape I started my stain cloth on the taped edge and pulled away from the tape onto the wood. This also helps in not allowing the stain to go under the tape. Now for the drying time……………….waiting……………………waiting………………….ding ding it’s done. Those dots represent 1 hour.
Now to reveal the design under the tape. Removing the tape is like Christmas morning and opening a gift. The raw unstained wood made the dark walnut stain stand out. It turned out beautiful compared to the trashed table top it was before this process. I recovered the chairs but before attaching them to the chairs everything got a final clear coat for protection. This truly was a trash to treasure kinda piece. It was on its way to the city dump when I saved it. I tried to pass it off to a few people but no one wanted to save it. I did and I’m glad I did . It’s a Blue Happy miracle. LOL
