Remember the 70’s? Well some of you will because you lived them. Some will not because you weren’t old enough or not even born. I remember them well I was a child of the 60’s. Home decor was about bad floral print sofa’s, tacky brass stuff and there isn’t enough blog space to go into that terrible germ filled shag carpet. One of the things I remember is a decor that drug its self past the 70’s into the 80’s and began to slow its roll in the 90’s. Baskets and lots of them. People hung them on the wall, lined book shelves and table tops with them and sat them every where. Now days they are in droves and piles around thrift stores. They are dark and dusty, plain and boring now what to do with them, I’ve got just the plan.
Color, jute and other odds and ends can change these baskets into great places to organize and store. You can grab them up so cheap why not restore them into functional decor. For this project spray paint is your best friend. There are so many colors out there to pick from. This is a great way to add color to your home or keep it simple with black. What ever you decide make it something you enjoy looking at.
How many ways can you use these baskets:
- On top of your dryer for laundry
- Under beds for storage
- Next to your front door for packages
- In a child’s room for toys
- Next to your favorite chair for those extras
- On the kitchen counter for fruit
- Extra towels in the bathroom
- Family room blankets
The list goes on and on of the many places they can function in. Baskets in your favorite hobbie store today are expensive. If you shop a thrift store you can find these baskets from .50-10.00 depending on the size. Let’s face it baskets haven’t and don’t change much in style so why not get them at a low price.
This is my laundry room I use an old basket for my recycle bin.
Here’s an idea for using baskets to refresh a room. Find a place in your home to make a family center. Go thrifting and find a small basket for each member of your family. Make cute tags to hang on the front with each persons name. Hang them all in a row vertical one right after the other top to bottom. Or hang them horizontal all in a line. Put a dry marker board next to the baskets for messages. Finish your family command center with a bench to sit on when putting your shoes on. Maybe the bench can have a place under it to keep your shoes and or backpacks. School is just around the corner. It never hurts to start the year decoratively organized. Without organization the school year could start a bit bumpy.
Baskets from the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s are old and stale but a little TLC, spray paint and other add on’s bring them front and center of your Blue Happy refreshed decor.
