Here is a little something that will make your Monday morning a little Blue Happier. During spring break I had to run the pottery kiln none stop. We were weeks away from the big spring art show and it had to be done. All week I went back and forth to school making sure every little artist had their pottery done and in the show. On the last day of the week I wanted to do something fun so I got on-line and found some sales to go to. In Dallas there was a lady getting ready to make a move across country and the movers were showing up that next morning. She still had lots of furniture she didn’t wanna take so it was mark it down time. Sad for her bubbles for me.
She advertised a dresser is great shape that was ready to use. I loved the look of it and the color wasn’t so bad after all. I went to pick it up for only $40 but her idea of in great shape wasn’t quiet the same as mine. This dresser took more than just a clean up. I ended up sanding every inch of the 5 layers of paint off. As I sanded it started out black then white down to green then to red and finished with purple. Thought I would never see wood and when I did the damage was so bad I had to paint it again. If you look at the picture you can see I used a paint remover on the top. You can also see some of the layers of color. I repainted the body in black so the damage would be covered. This dresser was so mistreated no way could you repair all the stains, chips and scratches.
The top of the dresser was is okay shape so I added a stencil to cover water rings in the wood and stained over that. Now the drawers were already painted black with this gray/green color over that. I kinda liked it so I left it. The only thing I did was to sand the edges and shabby it up a bit.
The hardware is old and original to the piece. Over the years it had been painted and then sooner or later it had started chipping. I left it that way because to me it told a story about the chest and all the wear and tear it had been through. Sometimes I wish furniture could talk to me and tell me it’s story. I’m sure that we would be so surprised to what, where and how it got to where it is today.
Once the dresser top was finished and paint on the body was dry I clear coated the entire piece. It is just beautiful now and has a new life for many more years. This dresser by far isn’t perfect. All the imperfections make it Blue Happy now.
