Sometimes I come across odd little things that I’m not sure can or could be a great redo. When that happens my creative soul always feels the need to rescue that piece and make it into something. In an auction at Rustybydesignauction.com I bought a box lot of things. What that means is there are several items grouped together and you are bidding on all of them. You must take all or none of it at pick up. That is hard sometimes because I might want one of the items but not all of them. That is what happened when I bid on a box a few weeks back.
I won the bid and was so excited about this creative idea in my head. I didn’t really care what other stuff was in the lot. Pick up day I wanted to get there get home and start on the project I had planned. I did notice as they sat the box in my car that there was a small metal box that looked hand-made. It had rust spots and stains but I didn’t care I wasn’t planning on using that piece. Normally when I get things I’m not going to use I donate them to a store right next door to Rusty’s. They are a helping hands store to the Forney community.
Over the next few weeks this odd little box sat in my studio. For some reason I didn’t want to get rid of it so it just sat on the table. I started to give it thought like I could use it to store bits and pieces I use for redo’s. Still I did nothing with it. One Saturday I needed to test a spray paint color and I grabbed it to test the color. I painted the inside of the box a beautiful navy blue with Valspar Project Paint. I just kept painting until the entire inside was covered. I was testing the paint to see if I like the finish. The can said flat and I wanted to see if I liked it to put on another piece. After it dried a bit I went to check on it. I loved it! I decided to just finish out the piece. I flipped it over and painted the outside with a high gloss gray. This little odd box was starting to pick up some momentum in the “I like this little box” range. I found my self-starting to get into making it something that could be used for organizing. After it all dried I used shelf liner and cut pieces to line the bottom of each compartment. The shelf liner isn’t your typical ugly color it has a bit of design to it and that makes it that much better.
So there it is a hand-made little metal box I really didn’t want in the first place. All done up and dressed up pretty it’s a perfect piece for any home. There are so many ways to use this in so many places in your home. It just goes to show you that you need to stop and look at the potential of any item before you decide to toss it out. Sometimes all it needs is a little color, care and love to make it more than what it has been left to. That is what can make your home Blue Happy and organized.
