Learning From My Mistakes

October 6, 2016

Do you have a dog?  I do I have 2 and they mean the world to me.  I hear people say they aren’t dog people or I have a dog but if it died I would be okay.  When I get an animal it is forever till death do we part.  I sometimes feel I need a dog around me to make life good.  The love of a dog is unconditional.  That is love we all need no conditions just pure love.

I’ve had many dogs over the years of being married to Greg. We always took the best care of them even when they got sick and the vet bills added up.  Years ago in 1999  we bought a schnoodle for my son Dallas.  Frosty was his given name because we bought him on a very cold Christmas eve morning from a lady that had him tied to a tree.  Frosty and I bounded and he became my dog.  I guess you could say I was a terrible mom cause I took my sons doggie.  We got him another dog and that was our sweet Cedric.  Frosty and Cedric were  both amazing dogs, both rescued and both gave us unconditional love.  Frosty lived to be 15 plus years old and Cedric 13 years which was amazing because he was a boxer.  Just before Frosty passed away Greg got me a sweet little bundle of joy now named Cooper. A few months after Cooper in came Cherry to our home. They are both full of energy, full of love and full of trouble all in one.  We love them and they add so much to our lives daily.

Cooper and Cherry love toys and have many of them all over the house.  Every night I gather them up and put them into their bed that is in the living room.  The next morning they get in the bed and play but before the day is over all of those toys are out of the bed and all over the floor.  They love having a place to play and sometimes take a nap.  These two don’t slow down often but when they do they like their bed.

I love having a place for them but sometimes these beds are ugly.  Why not find away to make the dog bed part of the decor of your home.  I made one of these dog beds before and learned from that one how to make it better.  I started with an old drawer, painted it out in two colors, added hardware and a soft doggie bed.  Linen White by Valspar on the outside and Apple Green on the inside gives it a punch of color that makes it more than just a pillow on the floor.  I aged it by sanding to were the wood shows through in several places not just the edges.  After 3 coats of clear finish I added the hardware to the front of the drawer.  I picked a dog bed that would fit inside perfect.  What I learned from the first bed was I made two mistakes so I fixed those mistakes to make it better. First I cut out the sides for easier access.  Before I left it squared off and found that works for large dogs with long legs but those shorties need the open end to get in.  Second I added the handle to the front of the drawer to make it easier to move around the home.  Because a drawer has the decorative front panel it sits uneven, so I added a small piece of wood that runs along the back of the drawn on the bottom. Now it sits even and is ready for a sweet doggie to nap or play in.

The simplest thing can make your home look and feel more organized. Having a place for everyone that is in your family is important.  Making a dog bed out of an old door is recycling and reusing something that would have been put into the trash.  Today is a great day to make a bed for your dog or you can pick this one up at Doc Hollidays Emporium in Wylie.  I’m sure today is gonna be Blue Happy!
