It’s October and it’s time to get ready for the holiday season that’s just around the corner. This past weekend in Waco I found a jewel in the mix of all the junk stores I shopped at. When I first saw it I wasn’t sure what it was. When I opened the top I was so surprised but what a delight it was. I have never seen a wood ice bucket, have you?
What a great find I thought, but could it be finished and made fresh to reuse again? You know I’m gonna try because I still believe that everything can have new life even if it’s repurposed into something different the second time around. So that is where I started trying to refurb it to have new life. I carefully sanded away the clear coat that had been applied at least 20 years ago. The wood on the outside is a wood veneer and very thin so “carefully sanding” is an under statement at best. I was successful and no rips appeared as I sanded. I wanted to do the stencil stain I often do so it was pretty when it wasn’t being used. I added the stencil and let it dry. Once dry I sanded most of it off to give it a worn but still dressy look. I applied the stain going with the grain of the veneer and wiped it down. I applied 2 coats of stain all together. Once the stain was dry I applied 3 coats of clear finish to seal it good from dropping ice and water.
This is a small find but what a big bang it will have during the holiday season. It’s perfect for any gathering that you will need extra ice. How often do you have to get up and get ice for a guest at a dinner or lunch. How great to have it sitting on the table or on the buffet server so it is in arms reach. Great for an out-door area so you aren’t having to run in and out of the house for extra ice. So many things and events come to mind when you need extra ice. Now the ice can be served in a pretty ice bucket not just that ugly plastic bag.
I’m finding it hard to tag this little project for Doc Hollidays Emporium. I kinda wanna keep it for myself but I’m trying to not do that so my house doesn’t get over flowed. I hope you enjoyed this redo and I hope your Tuesday is as blessed as you need it to be. Have a Blue Happy Tuesday!!!
