Last week I wrote a blog about Rusty By Design and all the amazing things I buy. Well if you look back at the blog I showed a picture of a dresser that I said I bought for a wedding gift. Well it’s done and will soon be on its way to Arkansas. I had such a blast doing this piece because I put a lot of their personality in this piece. I love to get the things that most have forgotten about. This piece had lots of issue like drawers that needed repairs, drawer rails that needed to be reattached and a large piece of wood missing right out of the top front. No big deal I knew I could give it new life, a new look and a restored life.
Daniel and Ashley are the couple and they are both in the agriculture business and love to hunt. I giggled the first time I met her and she and Daniel had been out hunting. I thought okay a girl who hunts, fishes and loves nature has to be the perfect girl for my nephew. She was and she is, so soon they will be married. I let them know I wanted to do them a piece of furniture. What they needed was a dresser so that’s what I did for them.
This dresser had to be something special. Putting their personality on it was going to make a statement. I had these great deer head hardware, I bought them at Hobby Lobby a few months ago. There are few times I buy something I don’t need but this was one of those times. I’m glad I did because they are the perfect hardware for personality. The first thing was a good clean and repairing the damage. The top had to be removed and replaced. I wanted to stain the top and doing a repair with wood fill wouldn’t allow that to happen. I used the old wood top to trace on the new wood. I used a jug saw to cut it out followed by sanding and staining. I did my regular painting and sanding the edges but this time I decided to paint the inside of the drawers out. They were old and worn out so a coat of paint to freshen them up went a long way. I painted the top 2 in dark blue and the bottom 3 light blue just to be whimsical.
The hardware had to be spot on to not over power the deer heads. This dresser, best I can tell looking at its style and the way its made its at least 75 years old or more. It had great bones and it was well build but it had been neglected over time. Because of its age I couldn’t find hardware that would match up to the holes already drilled. So I went with wood knobs and stained them the color of the new top. It worked perfect and it looks like it has always been like that. I was told that the furniture they are going to use in the bedroom is dark brown. It would have been impossible to match that color so I used a color that is a tan base but has a green hint to it. This goes along with the hunting and nature part of their personality.
I hope they love it and get lots of use out of it. Their day is coming soon and I hope they take the time to slow down and enjoy all that is happening. I’m praying they have a Blue Happy future and you have the same today on your hump day.
