Last week I did the blog on those sweet little twins. I finished the table and now they need a place to store supplies and a place to sit while they create. I combined the two needs by making them cube stools that open to store supplies in.
A few months ago while at my doctor for a weight check up he ask if I had any need for some wood shelves. You know I said yes because why would I turn down free wood or really free anything. So I piled it in my car and off to my house to be added to my wood stash.
I’ve used some of it to make pillow boxes and other projects but until now I didn’t have a need for it. With this project it came in really handy. I measured the table legs and cut the wood for the stools at 11 inches, that was half of the table height. I cut 5 boards for each stool and used a thin piece of mason board for the bottom. My nail gun was the perfect tool to put them together. I love using the nail gun it makes you feel like you’ve got power in your hand. I used block cleats on the underside of the lids so it will stay put when they sit on it. I almost used hinges on the lids but didn’t because I was afraid of smashed fingers if it shut on them. Before I started the paint I gave both of the boxes and tops a really good sanding. I wanted to make sure there were no edges that would hurt these two cuties. Once sanded it’s time to let the painting begin. I decided to paint the cubes the navy color like the table. I used the same Valspar paint that is for wood. It includes the primer built in for good coverage. Once the paint had dried I decided to go one step more and add their names to the boxes. This way both kids know what box is theirs and what supplies are theirs. Just like the table top there is no question where to sit to do your work. I gave it a quick clear coat and put soft pads on the bottom to protect the floor and it was all done!
I’m gonna deliver this table to the family this weekend. I can’t wait for Nicole and Chris to let me know what the kids think. Grand total to build out this idea $13. Yep just $13 lets see the wood was free, the idea and table all free and the paint well that was $12 if you add in the CD holder on top that was $1 at a garage sale. Oh and I can’t forget to say the wood letters that spell out their names also free someone gave them to me when they didn’t need them anymore. Creating things and making them from old but usable items is something that comes easy to me. I’m not sure why I have these ideas in my head but I’m glad I do. It’s such a rush for me to find something and a bigger rush when I change it into something special. I hope these two kids have many hours of fun at this table creating their own art. Thursday seemed like it took forever to get here. I think when you get Monday off it makes you off a bit. It’s the eve of the weekend so make plans for a Blue Happy weekend.
