Shabby Chic or Just Trashed

August 2, 2016

I personally struggle with things in my life that don’t have a clear answer. When you have something that clearly has life left in it but it’s been broken. So for the past couple of years I have had this table runner in my linen closet. Its made of burlap and for years it was on my dinning table. I purchased it at Hobby Lobby one fall because I thought it would be great year round. I do have a bit of burlap around the house so it would fit right in with the decor. After a few years I noticed it had a few more stains than I couldn’t cover up with a center piece. I really liked it so I thought I would just die it a darker color and use it a few more years. I stuck it back in the linen closet and there it sat until this week.

My linen closet needed a bit of a redo because it had become lets say………a big mess. Yes that’s the word Big
MESS. The people in my house don’t know how to take the bottom blanket of a stack without messing up everything. Oh and why fix the mess you made because Momma will fix it soon enough. Okay enough of that rampage I’ll move on with the project for today.

As I cleaned I found this cute little burlap table runner and almost tossed it into the donate stack. I had tried to dye burlap on another project and it didn’t do as well as I thought it would. So what to do with this runner to save it and make it useful once more. Light bulb moment I need to cover the stains so you can’t see them anymore. STENCILS! Yep why not use acrylic paint and stencils to give it an updated design and recycle it back into a useful piece of decor for the home.

I picked 3 colors of paint Ocean green, avocado green and white. I dug in my stencils and pick way more than 3 and just starting adding different stencils in white. I over laid the white stencils with the ocean green flower stencils and followed that with the avocado green circles. It seemed a bit bare so I then added the small white dot stencils to fill in the spaces around the design. When I started I didn’t want both ends of the table runner to be the same. So I did one end and then the other making sure they were the same stencils but the lay out was different. It gives it a more natural look and not so perfect, I guess you could say a shabby chic look.

We all get tired of what is around our home. If you can take a minute to think of how to reinvent things you already have you can save so much money. Using your creativity to rework your home decor can be a fun way to involve your family on a Saturday. You can use stencils and acrylic on pillows, sheets and pillow cases, just about anything that is cloth that you want to change. Acrylic is a water based paint and once its dry it will be fine to wash it in the washing machine.

Okay tomorrow I promise that the blog want be late in the day and it will be a finished blog. LOL I’m getting better at the MAC thing. I hope that your Tuesday is a great one and you have many Blue Happy moments!!!
