My Hill Country Treasures

August 10, 2016

I shopped so much on my trip in South Texas Hill Country. My truck was loaded and I was exhausted when we started the drive home to Dallas. Shopping junk stores, antique shops and any road side sale is hard work but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I wanted to share a few of those treasures with you starting with a gift for my grand-daughter Scarlett. I’ve just about got everything stored up to decorate her new nursery in the new house. I got the crib, changing table (or what we are revamping to make one), organizing decor and all the little things to make it warm and welcoming. For my daughter’s birthday I bought her a nursing chair. It’s gray twill fabric with white piping all along the edges. The chair came with a matching ottoman in the same fabric and piping. As a mom I know she will spend many nights in that chair catching a little sleep. I found this beautiful quilt in a shop in south San Antonio. It was perfect in light pink and white, with no stains and it was hand stitched. I can imagine my daughter reaching up and pulling it down to cover her as she naps next to the crib. Old quilts that are clean and not worn are hard to find. I snagged this one for a great price of $65. I sang all the way to the car. Not really but I did smile as if I had just won the lottery.

The next great treasure was found in a junk store somewhere south of the city. My friend Rosa had sat up this great string of stores that she shops often. In the far back of the junk yard was this metal parrot on a perch. I liked it but wasn’t sure Greg would go for it. I’ve told you before our patio and pool area is decorated in a white trash red neck kinda way. I giggled as I told Greg I wanted it. To my surprise he said I like that it’s so cool. When we got it home it fit right in to the theme of things around the yard. I was at work when Greg added the sign. Yes we already had the sign, I told you we collect white trash redneck items in our travels.

Store after store we gathered so many treasure and Comfort Texas was not a disappointment. Greg and I got to Comfort a bit before everyone else so we stopped in a thrift store to look around. Greg noticed this tier table sticking out from a pile of furniture. It was priced at $10 and Greg knew to grab it up. When we got to the register the lady told us there was a matching table back there somewhere. We found it but it wasn’t easy. This store needed to be organized badly. We paid and got out of there before I started organizing.

My favorite piece I bought on this trip wasn’t a piece that I will redo. It will stay just the way it is old, nicked and worn. In its day it was called a writing desk. I look at it and have to wonder who made it, how long ago, what was written on this desk and why didn’t they keep it in the family. I have it now and I will cherish it for years to come and pass it on in my family. I guess I will be doing somewhat of a repurpose with it because now it is an artist desk.

The blanket will cuddle my little girl as she holds her little girl in their new home as winter sets in. The parrot will be a conversation piece for our friends to laugh at. The two tier tables will be up cycled into usable furniture for a home. I could go to stores that sale new items but whats the fun in that. Digging and looking for a treasure among piles of junk is the best day ever. There are so many great treasure from the past few decades I plan on finding and saving as many as I can. Greg calls me a trash troll I’d like to think I’m more of a treasure troll. Hump day is here enjoy! Have a Blue Happy Wednesday.
