Months ago I blogged about the building of my art studio. If you remember it took months to get it built. In the mist of it all Greg fell off a 10 foot ladder and 4 days later went into the hospital for what seemed forever. He is all well now and doing great, back at work and driving me crazy. Nothing seems to ever change with that man. I posted pictures of my sweet little studio and told you the story, but let me remind you of a few special things about this creative space. I have changed a few things and wanted to share with you these changes. The idea of my studio started with some old doors, old pallets and a trash pile of used wanes coating. Everything in the build of my studio with the exception of a few 2×4’s, siding and deck boards is recycled. I picked up trash from the curb for months to get everything I needed. The doors are the walls, the old pallets are the wall covering on the inside and the wanes coating well I turned that up side down, stained it and its now a beautiful wood floor. I used art gifted by students worked into the walls with the pallets and used an old mirror to cover a large part of the wall in the back. The ceiling is left open to the rafters so I can use areas for storing art supplies. The only door that opens is the french doors that go out onto the deck area. The french doors aren’t new they were used and I purchased them at a recycle home supply store. There is one solid wall and that is at the back of the studio where I keep all my supplies organized. That wall does have one window and it is amazing. I wish I knew its story, I’m sure it has a good one. It is an old transit window I found at an auction. It seem to catch my eye and when I won it for $10 I knew I was supposed to have it.
The deck is something that has transpired over time. At first we weren’t going to put up any railing around the edge. As always things just seem to happen and my creative ideas just keep on coming. I was at a junk store and they had this beautiful old curved hand rail that was begging me to buy it. I brought it home and Greg made adjustments to it and made it work on the outside of the door. It looked as if it was there all along. As time passed other railings presented themselves for next to nothing and they all seemed to work with the deck. When I get them all up or Greg gets them all in place, I will paint them all out in white. The deck will be complete and perfect to sit and paint, visit with a friend or just enjoy the sun. I will post pictures of the finished deck when it’s all done.
Going back in the studio I have changed a bit of the furnishings to help better use my space. I used to have lots of chairs and tables. They seem to take up to much space so I removed the chairs and left only 2 tables. When I do have a class the chairs are easy to move back in and pull the long table aways from the wall. I added a small black cabinet that I was no longer using in my house. It gave me more storage for supplies and I repurposed something I didn’t need anymore. On an auction weekend @Rustysbydesignauction I found this great cabinet that holds my stencils. I love to have a place or space for everything. Organization makes your creative moments flow better when you can find everything. When we removed the door handles from the old doors now the walls Greg covered the holes with old pieces of pallet wood. I used these to attach decorative hooks. On these hooks I hang tools that I use often so they are easily grabbed. The space works better for me now when I do a big project.
When you redo a space you will find that you have to be open to change, adding to or taking away from your original design. When I first put my studio together I thought it was perfect and it was to a point. Once I started working in the space I found that making these changes made the space work for me. I can never say enough about organization to the spaces in your home. If you have to spend time looking for things that you need then you are wasting time you could enjoy. It can be over whelming to get a space organized I know I’ve been there. Take small baby steps organize a space that is small like a bathroom counter top, then your closet and so on and so on. Before you know it your home will be a working machine that is well-organized.
I love being in my studio and I so appreciate the love that went into building it. I find myself spending most of my free time in this creative space. It feeds my need to have quiet time to get my head around whatever project I’m doing. I hope you enjoyed this visit to my studio via my blog and photo’s. I love to have visitors so message me if you wanna come by for a visit. You know I love Monday’s it is the best day of the week, a fresh new start to get it right. Have a Blue Happy Monday!
