Junk? I Think Not

May 5, 2016

I have so many people say to me their house is a wreck.  They can’t decorate it because all their furniture is hand me downs.  Another one, all my furniture is junk, not real wood so I can’t do anything with it.  All of these statements can be corrected with not much money at all.  Your home can be a place you love to live in and you are proud of.  I’m gonna prove to you that you can redo furniture that isn’t real wood, that most would think is junk and any hand me down piece can be up cycled into a great piece to organize your home today.

CD holders are everywhere in all the thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales.  Most of these pieces are made of press wood or a wood like product that is put together with not much of anything but glue and staples.  Not sure when but I guess sometime in the past 6 months I found 2  CD holders in a neighbors trash pile just waiting to be hauled off to the city dump.  I picked them up because they offered great storage options.  One had drawers and the other was open with no drawers.  I forgot to take a before picture of the one with drawers. So I snapped one of the open shelf so you could get the idea of what it looked like before I gave it the Blue Happy treatment.I didn’t want it to be to fussy so I used a soft blue spray paint to give it a good cover.  Before I started to paint, on the top I decided to use a stick on stencil of the word RELAX.  I then gave it a very light coat of paint and walked away so it could dry.  That is the trick to spray paint is slow and steady coats so you don’t have runs and spotty paint coverage.  Once I did 3 light coats it  built up full coverage and looked great.  After it had dried I removed the stick on stencil to reveal the dark wood underneath.  The word RELAX stands out against the light blue paint and is a reminder to do just that RELAX.  Of course I sanded the edges for my all loved shabby chic look.  When sanding edges of a piece that is not real wood you have to do it very softly and not to aggressive or you can get to deep into the press wood.

Here are a few things this little cabinet could be used for:

  • Toilet paper holder
  • Sewing items for quick repairs
  • Back door personal item organizer
  • Kitchen pantry to hold spices
  • Office supplies

These are only a few ideas, I’m sure you can even think of more things.  One more comes to mind it would be great for yarn! Once you roll the yarn up the cut out on the front of the drawer allows the yarn sting to flow while your knitting.

My point to this blog is that no matter what you have in your home you can change things.  No matter your budget your home can be beautiful and full of style if you make the effort. I hear so many people say they hate their house, that it’s not nice.  Make it nice, turn your house into a home.  Do it one room at a time with out costing you big bucks.  There isn’t anything that can’t be painted.  At Lowes there is brush on paint and spray paint for any surface.   Find that one item that inspires you and makes you feel good.  I like to start with a piece of art work or a pretty accent pillow.  You might have something already or need to find and buy something  but as long as it makes you happy then buy it.  Pull colors from that one piece and decorate around it.  Pulling items from other rooms in your home is a smart way to fill your room and make it fresh again.  What ever you do make sure that you incorporate items that help you keep the room organized.  Start with a small piece and jump in!!!

I love this little piece and plan on doing something special with the other CD holder as well.  I don’t know what yet but I’ll post it on the blog so you can see it as well.  I hope that your Thursday is fantastic and Blue Happy!
