Would You Pick This Up?

March 21, 2016

I’m on the continuous look out when I drive anywhere. With yesterday’s arrival of the first day of Spring my eyes are wide open. Most people start to clean out their homes and garages to make ready for the warmer weather. That is when I find piles of treasures just waiting to be renewed, removed and recycled.

A few weeks ago while on my way to school I saw a really big pile on the side of the street right in my own neighborhood. I almost didn’t stop because it didn’t look like anything I wanted. Remember only take what you can use or you will be the star of a reality show for hoarders. It could happen you know. As I passed I noticed a chair sticking out of the back. I entertained myself and pulled over to see what this chair was about. BONUS for me it was great! The cushion was in really bad shape and it smelled, pretty sure it was a doggies bed at one point. a few months ago I bought a chair almost like this that sat a bit higher from an auction. I paid about $20 for it, so this one at the price of FREE made it a treasure.

I like the wood and wanted it to stay more natural so I opted not to paint it. I wiped it down with furniture oil and focused on finding a bright cushion for it. Pier One is a great place to shop because they have cushions in stock and plenty to pick from. The only problem was what color and pattern to pick from. I laid out many on the floor, I’m sure the sales gal hates me. I like them all but the floral seemed like it was going to be hard to make it fit into a room. I went with a teal blue because one I love blue and two you can add a pillow with print to give it personality in any room.

I love that people toss things out that I can grab off the side of the street, but before you just give up on something really look at your home and rooms. Try to see how you can redo, reuse and up cycle things to save your money and save the landfills from filling up. Sometimes things are not reusable and have to be tossed out but most of the time they only need some creative thought and a splash of paint. I hope you have a fantastic Monday. It’s the best Blue Happy day of the week.

    1. I usually pick up what I can and fix it and either find a place for it or sell it!

      1. Way to go Heather. Picking up things that you can use or make better for someone else to use is a great way to make our foot print on this world smaller. Making a little cash on the side is awesome and fun. Send me before and after pics please. I dearly miss you but I’m enjoying watching you live life.
