70’s Oldie, Today’s Goodie

November 4, 2015

One night really late there was a knock at my door. I was a bit shy to look out the glass because I was home alone. When I peeked out my friend Debbie from the gym was walking away. I opened the door and she told me there was furniture sitting out for the trash pick up the next day. All my friends know I’m a trash troll and she was kind enough to stop her walk and let me know.

I jumped in my car and went on the hunt for the trash pile. Just around the corner I found this great little table I’m sure from the 70’s. It was stable but tired looking with great potential. In my car it goes and off to my house to be revived.

I had to lightly hand sand this because the clear coat was peeling and coming off. I then put 3 coats of black paint and sanded the edges for the worn look. I clear coated at least 6 times to make sure I sealed the paint. There really wasn’t a lot to do to the table base but I wanted to do up the glass a bit special. I used stencils and chalk paint to the under side of the glass. I then used scrap-book paper cut into small pieces to layer over the stencil work. I finished off the back of the glass with a thin coat of clear finish. This will seal and protect the paper.

This is a great little table for a reading area, patio or front entry. It was put out to the trash and was hours away from the city dump. So sad the way people toss things out and don’t give it a second thought. I know we can’t save everything or our homes will be over run, disorganized and simply out of control.  There are so many ways to get rid of things like donating to a thrift store, post things for free or for sale.  I appreciate all that I find in the trash of my neighbors but I can tell you there is so much being took to our city dumps.  Try to redo a piece and give it as a gift to a newly married couple or to Habitat for Humanity for them to sale.  So many options other than the city dump.

I love to save old things from being tossed out; it makes me truly Blue Happy. I can’t wait to find my next treasure and bring it back to life. What do you have that you are ready to toss out? Take a good look at it and let your Blue Happy imagination take over and save it from the dump. Go be Blue Happy!
