You Can Create Tuesday: A Towel Rack

July 21, 2015

I don’t know about you but in my house we are all about quick and easy and that’s most important in the mornings getting ready.  For the past few years  I lived in a 1990’s bathroom –  oh my can you say ugly! I’ll blog about my bathroom and all it’s yellow brass later.  Today I want to share with you a project that is beautiful and functional.  There was NO towel rack near the shower when we moved in.  The only one was over the over sized bathtub on the far wall, you couldn’t reach it unless you got in the tub.  I bought these hooks that hung over the shower wall on the outside that you hooked your towel on.  They worked for a bit but they never really fit so most of the time the towels fell on the floor along with the hook. Well now that I’m redoing my master bathroom I worked in a place outside the new spa shower to have towel hooks.  It turned out amazing!

Here are the supplies I used: You will need a board the length that you need for the space you have.  The length also depends on the number of hooks you are adding.  I’m putting 3 hooks on mine so the board is about 18 inches.  I choose to use a piece of wood I had from a previous project that was already painted black. Reuse reuse reuse! You will also need to have paint or stain depending on the look you are going for.

First you cut the board to the length you need.  I lightly sand it so it has a smooth finished look when you apply to paint or stain. Next is the paint or stain step.  I like to do 2 coats of paint and finish it with a clear coat so it seals the wood from the moisture. The stain can be one coat but finish also with a clear coat so it seals it.  I sanded it a second time to give it an old look.  I did one more final clear coat to seal it from the second sanding.   Now you are ready to place your hooks.  Play with the placement for a bit, line them up, place them in different uneven spots or what ever looks nice to you.  I choose to line them up – Yes a bit OCD.  Once you find your perfect hook line up attach them to the board.  I like things a bit in its natural texture stage so I chose to drill holes through the front side of the board to attach it to the wall.  You can purchase brackets for the back to hang your towel hook at any home improvement store.

This is a simple way to add something with color to your bathroom that also has function.  It’s those little things that make a room work for you.  This could also be a great gift for a new home owner, a wedding gift or even a college student.  It will make the bathroom a Blue Happy place!
